Gandalf the White is the reborn and more powerful version of the Magician Gandalf the Grey. After his death in the mines of Moria fighting the Balrog, his spirit was sent back to Middle-earth by Eru Ilúvatar himself (the God creator of Tolkien's work) to complete his mission.
Upon returning, he replaced Saruman as the head of the Order of the Istari and the White Council, assuming the color white which symbolizes his renewed leadership and authority.
In this way, he was allowed to reveal more of his inner strength and divine wisdom, being less "an elder counselor" and more of a direct commander in the war against Sauron.
